Discos Out (Murders In) @ Mr KypsNuttyness the Madness tribute band are playing Mr Kyps; Disco’s Out (Murders In) are supporting, and doing their utmost to make a big sound and party things up – lots of their fans like me are here from their 95 person guest list, so its not only a great atmosphere but a good party too. Ed is absent reducing them to 6 on stage; Martin and Imogen seem to be behaving extra nuttily to compensate; Steve and Lee particularly are making the most of the large Mr Kyps stage by springing about with some awesome lunging action that unfortunately we just can’t coordinate with in the crowd 😀

Nuttyness @ Mr KypsAfter Disco’s Out (Murders In)‘s amazing set and a lengthy stage reset, Nuttyness enter the stage making a grand suited and booted appearance, hats and dark glasses in abundance among the 6-piece. They kick off with some great licks, The Prince, One Step Beyond, before taking it down a step with Another Weary Day. A shout for modernity from the 80’s tribute – they can be tweeted while live @nuttinessband, and they’ll include them in the show. Its pumped again with House of Fun, which is where I take an exit to catch other some other gigs.

Willowen @ On The RocksI reach On The Rocks in time to catch the last few songs from Willowen. Its slightly more subdued than the last time I saw them, at the Inferno, but the crowd here are more into the band than they seemed to be at that latter venue. They are all going slightly crazy for some of the pacier numbers such as Drowsy Maggie & Dan’s House. I’m just impressed with myself I’ve managed to make a gig at this place, all the better for it being an intimate band like Willowen.

Hiproute @ Cellar BarOn to catch the last of Hiproute‘s set at the Cellar Bar, they are doing some blues, appearing under the UK Roots Movement moniker, as per normal for the last Friday of the month in this place. The slide guitar work is fairly dominant, with large bass riffs leading over the top occasionally, both being underpinned by solid steady drums. This is definitely more funk than blues for the most part, especially as they break out the acoustic guitar and transport us on a jolly journey that definitely gets the foot tapping…

Another night out, and the second chance I get to see Yellowgroove at Smokin’ Aces in as many weeks. I stick around for a set and a bit, and hence have an opportunity to hear their reworking of my favourite song, Son Of A Working Man. I like of many of their songs; this delivers all that they’d led me to believe, and its now longer, in my mind its only previous shortcoming. I leave after Loving Man, which followed a decent enough singalong cover of Mustang Sally.

I travel over to The Inferno where Willowen are playing. They are banging out decent tunes; its a bit different for a Saturday night since its acoustic while still plugged in. 6 string guitar-led with fiddle emphasis and cajon to provide the rhythm. They fit perfectly into the Bournemouth Sound stereotype, with good summery & beach sounds. I previewed their EP on the show this week as its available for free download at present from bandcamp, so get over there to gain a flavour. Another tack – they kick into a pretty faithful reproduction of traditional folk tune Drowsy Maggie before throwing in some of their own variations on that theme. I’m glad to have caught them before they come on the show in December, since I always prefer catching a band live in my research, to aid my show preparation.

Coke Can Jack‘s last, brief number No-one Loves Me Like You Do woke up what had seemed a sleepy cellar Bar, bringing some inspiration with a spirited performance. Of that one song.

They’d been doing covers from when I walked in – unfortunate given what I’d previously heard from them – uninspired and mainly unwanted, it’s unusual for me to pan a band’s performance in these pages, however there was little original interpretation in what they performed – Driftaway and before that something else that just washed over me. However, they are getting up and doing it, rather than me stood there being the critic!.

Talking around and to them, their opening had almost been as good as normally expected, just not the bit I caught. Turns out they were a key man down – their percussionist who gives them all a lift, so they’d carried on like troupers rather than cancel the gig. So all credit to them for not wanting to let the night down, they are the main troupers of this blog post.

Willowen sound promising. Backed by cajon they play some decent rhythms and different chord sequences that normal for acoustic guitar, definitely part of the Bournemouth Surf Sea sound – upbeat, punchy and positive, evocative of long Summers and so on.

Second song The Story instantly brings a smile to my face, simply because of the chord progressions, and the soulful chorus. Here’s a trio that are a man down (just Jonny & George); this doesn’t really come across in the performance…

Even the ubiquitous singer / songwriter / guitarist ballad stays on the Surf/Sea-style topic, no sign of mournful, maudlin dirge here – “Don’t worry / everything’s going to be alright/you’ll see /just do what naturally what comes to you /
Don’t worry / everything’s going to be alright/you’ll see /just try talking to me”

They play Champions on December 30th, well worth trying to get to see these guys.

Pink Moon over, a brief jaunt over to O’Neill’s for a very short foray into the Revolving Door world, where Tony 2 Dogs is playing his last song – this again is yet more upbeat acoustic stuff (am I still at the Willowen gig?)

Followed by Susanah fresh from gigging in Nashville (not many can say that here in Bournemouth). Nice enough tunes, slip easily into singer songwriter box – lonesome heart tunes from the soul – my mate Paul West would call this New Country no doubt!

I leave before Graham Jones and Patrick get on – been a busy night with a small party before getting out onto the scene…and I want an early finish for a change.
